How to choose a mattress

Three things decide whether a mattress will suit you: what it is made of, how firm it is and its size. Here is a quick summary. And if you would rather try them, we will help you at our shops in Águilas and Vera.

Types of mattress

  • Pocket springs: Each spring sits in its own pocket and works independently. It barely passes movement from one side of the bed to the other and lets air circulate: a good choice for couples and for people who sleep hot.
  • Memory foam: It moulds to the shape of your body and spreads pressure, with a cosy, enveloping feel. Thick memory foam layers tend to retain more heat.
  • Latex: Springy and quick to recover: it adapts to your body without you sinking in, and it breathes well.
  • Foam: Lighter and usually more affordable. Practical for children’s or guest beds.

Which firmness to choose

There is no single best firmness: it depends on how you sleep and on your weight. As a guide:

  • Firm: if you sleep on your back or front, or if you weigh more.
  • Medium: if you change position during the night.
  • Softer: if you sleep on your side and weigh less.

The best test is to try it: lie down for a few minutes in the position you usually sleep in.

Which size you need

  • 90 and 105 cm wide: for one person.
  • 135 cm: one of the most common double sizes in Spain.
  • 150 and 160 cm: for two people with more room.
  • 180 and 200 cm: the widest sizes.
  • Length: 190 cm is standard; choose 200 cm if you are taller than about 1.80 m.

The mattress must be the same size as the base, slatted frame or storage bed.

When to replace your mattress

It is usually recommended every 8 to 10 years, or sooner if it has sagged, you can feel the springs or you wake up tired or sore.

Frequently asked questions about mattresses

What size is a double mattress?

In Spain, one of the most common is 135 × 190 cm. If you want more room, 150 × 190 or 150 × 200 cm.

Is a pocket spring or a memory foam mattress better?

It depends on what you are after: pocket springs are cooler and do not pass on your partner’s movements; memory foam moulds more to the body. Many mattresses combine both.

How often should you replace a mattress?

It is usually recommended every 8 to 10 years, or sooner if it has sagged or you wake up sore.

Can I try the mattresses before buying?

Yes, at our shops in Águilas and Vera. If you are looking for a specific model, call us and we will tell you if it is on display.

Do you deliver mattresses?

Yes, free home delivery throughout the Region of Murcia and the province of Almería, usually within 2 to 9 working days. If you like, we will take your old mattress away for recycling, free of charge. You can also collect it in Águilas or Vera.
